Presentations

ORIGIN

Of all the various activities I engage in, I would have to cite the presentations as usually being the most immediately gratifying. Being able to see and hear the joy the audience derives from the performances of these great artists, especially those they were not familiar with, makes all the preparation time and effort, more than worthwhile. Special recognition, as detailed on the associated web page, is due to my good friend, Hal Miller, for serving as an excellent role model for many years with his own world class presentations, as well as all his invaluable advice, encouragement and rare video material.

Delivering presentations, similar to writing reviews and the radio programs, was an activity that was definitely not planned, began very simply and evolved over the last 5 years into something far different than what started. Ms Gail Mattsun, who was familiar with my involvement with the concert advisory committee and writing staff of our local jazz society, A Place for Jazz, was the catalyst for this activity.

In 2002 she was moderating an 8 week adult education course at Empire College in Saratoga Springs, NY for the Academy of Learning in Retirement (ALR). She asked if I would come to one of their sessions to talk about the
Songbirdsgroup, plus any thoughts I’d care to on jazz vocalists and possibly play an audio selection or two.

My Oct 8, 2002 program there was a fairly limited one, including about 30 minutes of discussion and playing 3 songs with my
cassette boom box, as detailed in Initial ALR Presentation. However, the reaction was very positive, as the seniors appreciated my enthusiasm (despite my lack of experience); but even more so, the quality of the vocalists, which they rarely heard today on radio or TV.

Over time, the approach to the presentations evolved into utilizing specific themes. The audio cassettes were replaced with DVD’s and I began supplying handouts and commentary with far more background material on the artists. For a quick one page listing of all those delivered to date, click on
